NTM stands for New-to-Me, a regular Tuesday feature here at Not Exactly Bento. With the start of my bento-making in 2007, I began to try many new foods to expand my palate and my recipe files. New-to-Me has expanded into all sorts of food items that I now try and review. Here is this week’s feature.
Recently, I wanted a snack while at work. I took a quick afternoon break, and trotted down to the Walgreens close to work. While there, I grabbed a bottle of water and looked for a quick snack. Honestly, I was just going to grab a bag of chips and go back to work. As I walked down the aisle, I noticed this popcorn on sale.
I’m not one much for anything cooked in a kettle. I’m not a fan of kettle cooked chips and I once did have kettle corn. I wasn’t impressed. I am also not a fan of pre-popped bagged popcorn. Normally, it doesn’t have much taste. Or you get something covered in a type of powdered cheese that tastes just horrible. This is what I think of Smartfood White Cheddar popcorn. Blech. I tried that in the last few months. Not. Good.
All this is to say, that I didn’t have high hopes for this popcorn when I picked it up. But it was on sale and the red bag caught my attention. And in all honesty I didn’t really want chips. Popcorn sounded like a better idea.
I went back to work with the bag of popcorn and a bottle of water. I sat back down to my computer with my treat thinking I was going to have a few wasted calories that I would wish I hadn’t wasted. However upon first bite, I was instantly hooked. I have lost count of how many bags of this popcorn I have consumed as I’ve tried this stuff again and again. Oh, let’s just be real. I’m not trying it anymore. I’m actively seeking it out at Wal-Mart and plunking down my $2.78 for a big bag of this stuff. Holy hell. Good stuff. It is a truly sweet, salty, buttery snack that is just DANG GOOD. I highly recommend it.
I liked this popcorn so much that I decided to try a few other flavors. The Smoked White Cheddar was interesting but the smoked taste made me think more of bacon than cheddar cheese. It was almost like eating bacon-flavored popcorn. Not quite what I was expecting and a bit too pungent for me.
I also picked up a bag of the Movie Theater popcorn. This one was too buttery for me. Way, way too buttery. This one I didn’t care for at all.
My plans are to try the Sea Salt flavor next. I hoping I’ll really like that one.
(As with all of my NTM posts, this one is unsolicited. I have not been compensated for my opinion nor have I been in contact with the company that manufactures this product. But hey, if they find me, they are welcome to send me some popcorn! LOL!)

Dammit Jenn. Now I want popcorn!
Me too!
Hubby likes microwave kettle corn, though the stuff fresh (say at a street fair) is fabulous! I’m glad I’m not the only who hates Smartfood popcorn. That and Pirate’s Booty. I really liked the name but not the booty.
I haven’t seen that brand of bagged popcorn. Not sure I’d buy it just due to the name.
Don’t tell me you’ve never had crawfish or crabs cooked in a kettle out on the lawn. You are in Louisiana aren’t you? We cook a lot of stuff in kettles here in Texas too. Our FRESH kettle corn is really good. But fresh is the key word. I’ll have to check out that brand.
Yes, I am in Louisiana.
LOL! However, I don’t normally dump a bunch of sweet sugar onto my crabs and crawfish as their are boiled. ROTFL.
I’m not a big fan of popcorn, but Indiana Kettlecorn is AWESOME!!! I’m so glad you discovered it in your neck of the woods!
LOL! I’m not sure discovering this was such a good thing. I’ve gotta stop buying this stuff!
I loveee the bacony one but you know I would. Also I like SmartFood quite a bit. But I also really like processed-cheese-food-flavored stuff every once in a while. You know. Childhood fondness and whatnot.
I like some processed cheese food flavored stuff too. Like cheetos. Getting my fingers all orange is a childhood memory for me.
Just not that particular popcorn. That was a bit shudderific for me.
