Tuesdays Tips: Fun Plates & Backgrounds

Orange Batik Fabric

I’ve talked a good bit here on NEB about choosing backgrounds for your blog photos. If you’ve been watching this blog closely, you may have noticed that I’ve been using the above background. Don’t you love it? It’s a type of fabric called a batik. Batik is a form of dying and decorating fabric originally begun in Indonesia. It is my favorite type of fabric. It is bright, colorful, vibrant, and appealing. It also tends to match my website very well.

With spring and summer on its way, I’ve wanted a brighter background for my bento photos. I remembered I had one or two uncut pieces of batik fabric from a quilt I may never finish (but have dreams that one day I will). I’ve been meaning to go to the quilt shop to purchase a few additional pieces of batik fabric for photo backgrounds. Then, fate intervened.

New Plates

My mother called me to tell me she had found another open-to-the-public restaurant supply place in Baton Rouge. Not only was it bigger and better than the place we went to for my birthday, we found out that place buys from this one. In case you live in Louisiana and are wondering what this place is, the name of the store is Ducote’s Restaurant & Bar Supply. When my mother told me about this place, I just had to go there. So we did. And I found these plates. And I fainted from the sheer joy of it.

I haven’t been completely happy with some of the plates I use here on NEB, even though they do make a nice photo.  I’ve wanted a plate or two that would match my color scheme better.  VOILA!  Now, I have some.  <big cheesy grin>

Various Batik Fabrics

On my way home from Ducote’s, I stopped by Fabric Krazy, a quilting store. I purchased a few new batik fabrics in what is called a fat quarter. This is a quarter yard length of fabric used in quilting. They tend to be about the size of a napkin. I’ve lined my new fabrics up with the one orange fabric I already had. You can see that I’m staying within the color scheme for this blog.

New Plates

As usual, I took some test shots to see how I would like the different plates against the fabrics. I’m so pleased it’s nauseating!

New Plates

Just as I’d hoped, the brown fabric matches everything.

Moral of the story: When choosing photo backgrounds and accessories for your food photographs, always keep your eyes and mind open. You never know what you might find that will be just perfect.

Wow, you’re so coordinated. *sigh* I sit at your feet in hopes that I will pick up some photography wisdom.

  2. Tobias says:

Oh those fabrics and plates are gorgeous! Now I want to go shop for some…

ooohhh, be careful. I’m finding this addiction to bento and everything I consider related to it dangerous. Give me enough time and I can find a way to connect absolutely everything to my addiction to this little obsession.. LOL!

Nice choices… I love having dishes in multitudes of colors. I have Fiesta Ware… one place setting in every color except that puke pink color. I just don’t think food looks good on that color.

This set reminds me of fiestaware greatly. I agree with the puke pink. I don’t want to eat my food off that color either!

  4. Elaine says:

Love the new plates and fabrics! I wish my backgrounds were as colorful and fun as yours. Will have to remember to stop by the fabric store soon for some scrap pieces…

Ahhhhhhhhh! I love it! I was wondering about that splashy fabric and how it’s almost “faded” in some areas but not – like the color is uneven in a way that reminds of hand-dyed fabrics (adds visual interest; I don’t mean that in a negative way!).

I really should pick a color scheme and stay within that. I just am not so focused. Scatterbrained…

PS I haven’t had time to respond but on my way home from class last night, got your email and I actually started snorting/giggling out loud on the train. People moved away from me. :) Thanks for the laugh!

LOL! Glad you got a giggle. And your response gave me a giggle too. Now, I’m off to be even more nauseating that usual. :)

Need the recipe for that little brownie cupcake looking thing with the pecan on top.

Your new plates look great! Good backgrounds too.
